Excellent stay

A charming hotel with lots of character and perfectly situated. Our room was spacious and we couldn't fault it. Staff very helpful and we really liked the courtyard. Only criticism was that there was no lift and I found all the stairs quite a struggle. Coffee machine is excellent!

Gold Dust!

We visited The George for Sunday lunch as a spontaneous visit after staying here a few years ago. This time bringing two teenage kids - the challenge to impress already on… especially on the hottest day of the year cramped into a 2.5 hour car journey.
Arriving over an hour late for our booking, we were expecting a frosty reception at best - but our table was held without judgement and considerately transferred outdoors to a lovely table and nothing was too much trouble.
A warm welcome indeed.
We were informed that the last 4 x roasts had been ‘reserved’ in the kitchen for us in case we chose them from the menu, as they were being requested elsewhere from other diners. They didn’t want us to be disappointed knowing we’d had a challenging journey it seems. How surprisingly thoughtful of the restaurant manger, George, who also greeted us with unreservedly good grace at the tail end of lunch service an a very busy weekend.
The menu presented was interesting and adventurous - devoid of chicken which forces you to pick a dish with more thought. . (I’m not a red meat eater but enviously eyed up the roast beef which half my family ate and was assured it was perfectly cooked)
The cod and clams I ventured to eat were beautifully presented and the fish and chips for my daughter fresh and inviting with the best mushy peas I’ve had in years.
Deserts included a wonderfully punchy and flavourful poached apple with a variety of stunning sorbets to refresh the palette, Champagne was served cold and notably sparkling (a good sign that the bottles are not open too long) but the wine was clearly not refrigerated long enough so had to swapped for a beer ( note to the bar - get a back up plan for this or use frozen glasses when you’re slammed? )
The attentive and friendly service however - from our Spanish waiter Ruyman (?)- made all the difference, despite being near the end of a gruellingly hot and demanding shift. Impeccably professional,, enthusiastic and friendly he went above and beyond in all areas. Exceptional in fact.
To end our relaxing visit - which was going so beautifully well - our teen lost her phone behind the bathroom sink. Not just a sink, but a one tonne piece of long granite. The George staff still did lose their enthusiastic smiles to help despite it being an impossible task. But give up? Neve! They were straight on the case arranging 5 workmen to come in the next morning to lift the sink out and retrieve her phone unscathed. We are speechless that any hotel would go to this length at their to own cost and inconvenience to rectify such a thing. And then arrange a secure delivery.
To conclude - we did not stay at The George but it was worth the day trip for a lovely afternoon. My advice is do not go anywhere else if you have the chance to visit, eat or sleep in Rye. This place is a slice of heaven with a truly winning team, refreshingly dedicated and charmingly well-mannered. It’s about going the extra mile and they delivered.

Preety but living on glory.

Decor is lovely, service is mixed, with disinterested bar staff and pleasant front of house. A terrace that needed tables cleaning more often so it seemed more of a smokers hang out, which was a shame as it was the only outside area. The bedrooms have no air-con and during a very hot night it made sleeping very uncomfortable, but fans were in the room, thank God. Breakfast was also pleasant but not great, nothing wowed. Overall pleasant, but I hoped for more

Full of old-world charm and great place to relax and chat.

Very comfortable and spacious room the other side of the courtyard. Recently fitted out, but still bags of character.
The main building is full of old-world charm. The bars and courtyard are great places to relax and chat.
The management and staff always very friendly and helpful. Dinner menu a little bit limited, but the food and service very good.
